Establishing Repository Groups for a Community

Part of the process for creating a repository under the Storage node (see Configuring the Storage Service ) involves selecting which community the repository will store files for, and then selecting which repository group (in that community) the repository will belong to. Therefore, before you can create a repository, at least one repository group must exist in the community. Repository groups are created under the Repository Group node under your community in AssetWise System Management Console.

A repository group is essentially an arbitrary grouping of repositories in the community that you create for some purpose. When users add files to the community, they do not select which individual repository they want to add the file to, instead they select which repository group they want to add the file to. Then behind the scenes, AssetWise decides which repository in the group it makes the most sense to add the file to. This decision is made based on the location of the user adding the file. For example, consider a repository group that contains two repositories, where one repository is in the USA and the other repository is in the UK. Files added to the repository group by USA users would automatically be added to the USA repository, while files added to the same repository group by UK users would automatically be added to the UK repository.

When you create a community, a repository group called Main is created by default. You can use this default group or create new ones as needed. You can rename any repository group. You can delete any repository group (including the Main group) as long as it does not contain any repositories.

Note: While the reason for creating a particular repository group may be arbitrary, repository groups do have some rules that they adhere to. For example, you can cannot replicate files between two groups, you can only replicate files within a group.
